Sciatica, A Pain In The Butt

Sciatica is a term that is used to describe pain and/or discomfort that is felt anywhere along the distribution of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body which branches off from the low back and runs through the buttock and down the back of each leg.

Common complaints include:

  • Pain in the low back, buttock, and/or leg

  • Numbness/tingling down the leg, into the foot

  • Weakness in the leg

Sciatica is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve usually in the lumbar spine. Spinal stenosis, a herniated disc, or a bone spur are some of the things that can irritate the sciatic nerve. Prolonged or repetitive movements that compress or stretch the nerve can also cause the symptoms.

A common risk factor is prolonged sitting. If you are experiencing these symptoms and you sit for most of your day, try getting up and walking around for a few minutes every hour if possible and/or invest in a standing desk.

Stretching, strength training, soft tissue mobilization, and nerve flossing are some of the techniques that can be used to help relieve the symptoms you are experiencing. At Dauntless Sport & Spine Clinic we focus on each of these areas to make sure all of our patients have a treatment and rehab plan that's right for them!
